Insect-Scale 'HAMR-E' Microbot Climbs Vertical and Curved Surfaces
Researchers from Harvard University's Wyss Institute created a tiny, 1.5 gram microbot called HAMR (Harvard Ambulatory Microrobot) that could be ideal for search-and-rescue missions with difficult-to-access spaces. The latest version, HAMR-E, has special elecroadhesive foot pads, origami-based ankle joints, and a variety of quadrupedal gaits allow it to scale vertical and curved surfaces. The battery-powered, autonomous bot could also be used for inspection and exploring hazardous environments. HAMR-E has eight actuators, so it can be developed to carry out various tasks. The technology is available for licensing.
