Driver-Monitoring: A New Era for Advancements in Sensor Technology


With the expanding availability of “hands-off” driver-assistance systems and a new federal law requiring the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to mandate that all personal and commercial vehicles have a driver-monitoring system that can detect an impaired driver, advancements are underway to determine how driver-monitoring sensors — or fusion of sensors — can best serve these varied requirements. Lidar, vision, radar, and infrared all have specific advantages and are among the favored technologies. Len Cech, Executive Director, Safety Innovation, Joyson Safety Systems

Len Cech joined Joyson Safety Systems in March 2002 and currently serves as the Executive Director of Safety Innovation. In the role, he is responsible for global research and development and intellectual property management. Len previously worked for GE in both the Lighting Home Automation product line and Information Services digital business monitoring operations. He has 24 years of experience in global automotive safety product research and development, including ADAS, restraints, and in-cabin sensors, as well as 12 years of practice in advanced sensor systems R&D for automotive telematics and defense industries. Len holds a bachelor's degree in engineering with a focus on engineering physics from The Ohio State University and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan.

Mike Franchy, Director, North American Mobility, Asahi Kasei America

Mike Franchy oversees business development, innovation, and go-to-market strategies for impaired driver detection, occupant monitoring, and EV battery materials for Asahi Kasei America as the company’s Director of North American Mobility. He previously worked at Robert Bosch Automotive Steering LLC where he led the regional Japanese OEM technical and commercial acquisition teams, winning the first-ever electric steering production nominations at Honda, Nissan, and Toyota. Mike’s automotive expertise also includes over a decade at ZF Steering Systems, working within the commercial vehicle sector, and later managing sales at Ford, General Motors, and DaimlerChrysler. He is a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers and has co-authored several technical papers for the Society. Mike holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Wayne State University and a master’s degree in management from Walsh College.

Kristin Kingsley, Consultant, Automotive Coalition for Traffic Safety

Kristin Kingsley serves as a Consultant for the Automotive Coalition for Traffic Safety, where she plays a crucial role in the development of The Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety (DADSS) Program. DADSS is a partnership between the U.S. Department of Transportation and the major U.S. automakers to develop in-vehicle technology to prevent drunk driving. Kristin has more than 25 years of experience in automotive safety engineering and policy development. She holds a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from George Washington University.
