Faster EV Charging with New Cable Design

EVs are only able to charge so fast due to high currents creating too much heat. Issam Mudawar has teamed up with the Ford Motor Company to design an EV charging cable that can handle four times as much current, potentially charging a vehicle in under 5 minutes.

“The industry has a gap in knowledge and expertise needed to switch from pure liquid cooling to liquid phase change cooling. How do you design the system? What type of equations do you use to optimize it? But we do have this knowledge through our extensive research,” said Issam Mudawar  , Purdue’s Betty Ruth and Milton B. Hollander Family Professor of Mechanical Engineering.
