The largest optics and trade show in North America, SPIE Photonics West 2024, is just a few days away from its annual collection of exhibitions, conferences and courses at San Francisco's Moscone Convention Center.

Take a look at five of the new technologies and products that will be on display and launching at Photonics West 2024.

Fast Multi-Channel Photonics Alignment Algorithm (FMPA)

The global demand for SiPh components is currently growing dramatically, and leading market research companies unanimously predict a quadrupling of the SiPh component market to around $10 billion by 2030. Productivity, throughput, and manufacturing costs are therefore increasingly in focus. One of the major cost drivers is the precise alignment of optical fibers to the photonic elements of the chips.

PI has been continuously expanding its range of automated photonics alignment engines over the last decade and will introduce new systems at both ends of the spectrum at this year’s event. A new, modular entry-level system based on mechanical stages, yet with a high-performance controller will be presented, as well as high-speed, air-bearing based systems for test and assembly applications requiring the highest throughput with zero wear and maintenance.

New Image Sensor and Photodiode

ams OSRAM offers a wide variety of photonics products, including LEDs, VCSELs, edge-emitting lasers, CMOS image sensors and mixed-signal analog integrated circuits. The company will debut two new groundbreaking products at the show. A new image sensor will offer power savings at high-quantum efficiency for battery-powered AR/VR devices and other camera-based eye tracking applications. The other new product is a compact photodiode that expands the company’s vital sign monitoring portfolio. It allows customers to optimize the power budget and extend battery life by reducing LED driving current.

The company also plans on featuring a total of 10 application demonstrations at its booth and technology experts from ams OSRAM will headline eight conference presentations at the show.

AR/VR Light Measurement Technology

Instrument Systems will be launching its new LumiTop 5300 AR/VR. The 2D luminance and color measurement camera has a high resolution and a straight lens. It was specifically developed for 2D testing of AR/VR display modules prior to installation in the headset, and complements the LumiTop 4000 with a periscope lens that has been tried and tested over many years.

The new TOP 300 AR/VR is also celebrating its premiere. The coupling optics provide an optical system modeled on the human eye, and can be connected to a CAS series spectroradiometer via a fiber connection. It was especially designed for simple optical tests along the production line of AR/VR modules.

OEM Hardware Module

Photon Force will be launching a new module version to extend its PF32 camera family. Since the company launched in 2015, its time-resolved product range has continually developed to meet the needs of customers, offering improvements from high speed variants to increased performance using micro lenses. The de facto standard 2D SPAD array camera for use in research applications where high throughput and the fastest time-resolved single photon counting are required, the range is now extended by addition of a compact module version suitable for building into low Size, Weight and Power (SWaP) production systems. The new module solution allows product developers full control over the optical path and easy mechanical integration.

Ultimate Detection Scientific Imaging

Exosens is expanding the Photonis Ultimate Detection Scientific Imaging portfolio with the introduction of the 25 mm Image Intensifier solution. Driven by a demand for increased active detection area in life science and scientific imaging applications, Photonis now offers ultra-high speed and scientific camera manufacturers their upgraded 25 mm Image Intensifier technology next to their well-established 18 mm and 40 mm range.
