A Low-Cost Solution for Hydrogen Production: The Lead-Acid Battery Electrolyser

Watch this video to learn about how Loughborough University developed the world’s first lead-acid battery-electrolyser: A low-cost system which makes it viable to use excess renewable energy to produce hydrogen gas. The innovation is being accelerated for use in renewable energy-powered microgrids that support the world’s poorest communities without access to electricity or clean cooking.

00:00:02 battery electrolyzer is a single piece of technology that operates both as a battery and an electrolyzer so you can put electricity in and get electricity back out or you can put electricity in and get hydrogen out so we took apart a lead acid battery we developed it as a sort of flow battery and we looked at whether we could produce hydrogen from it um under

00:00:27 electrolysis but also use it as a battery we think that the the project itself is very very important we're giving energy to people who previously had very very limited access we're also making sure that that energy is Affordable and sustainable it's going to have such a pronounced impact not just on Africa but hopefully across the world for instance here in the UK we can use

00:00:52 the battery electrolyzer as a grid energy storage solution we'll be using the green hydrogen for a multitude of uses initially it will be as a replacement for charcoal in clean cooking so by offsetting charcoal with our green hydrogen solution and green hydrogen cooking we can help alleviate some of these respiratory based deaths I'm in the lab and I'm testing the

00:01:12 performance and the durability of the combined battery and electrolyzer that we've produced at lfre University usually in lead acid batteries the gases are just combined and vented to wear because we don't want to collect them but for our cell we do want to collect the hydrogen it's very important that the hydrogen that we're producing producing is green hydrogen so um we

00:01:33 want to use a renewable method of energy production so that the whole process is um completely renewable and completely um self- sustainable using lead acid battery technology allows our technology to be part of the circular economy so we can recycle um 99% of the materials that we use in our technology using the already existing infrastructure for recycling lead acid
