Fast-Curing Epoxy System

Solvay (Atlanta, GA) has launched SolvaLite® 716 FR, an innovative fast-curing epoxy prepreg system designed for a wide range of structural parts and reinforcements in premium battery electric vehicles (BEVs). SolvaLite® 716 FR is primarily targeted at flame-retardant battery enclosure applications for premium and super-premium BEVs. It has a dry glass transition temperature (Tg) of 145 °C (293 °F) and has shown to outperform aluminum and discontinuous fiber composites in practical UL 2596 flammability tests by providing protection at a wall thickness of 2 mm. This system is designed for rapid curing, offering a press cure time of eight minutes at 150 °C (302 °F); with higher temperature and shorter cycle time capability designed to help converters achieve more efficient production routes, such as Solvay’s proprietary Double Diaphragm Forming (DDF) technology.

Lithium-Ion Battery Storage

Recyclus Group (London, U.K.) has developed a solution for the safe storage and transportation of lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries, the LiBox, which is now available for use across all sectors including automotive, portable devices and industrial. The LiBox is a pallet-sized, steel fabricated box, UN-certified and ADR compliant — the highest global standard for transporting hazardous goods. LiBox is rated to a 20kWh power rating, the highest in the industry, and can control thermal conditions of up to 2,000 degrees Celsius. Each box is filled with layers of Lithium Battery Fire Protection Pillows designed to contain and extinguish fires — should they occur — preventing risk of damage to property, people, and the environment. The design of the box is modular, so any damaged parts can be simply swapped out and replaced for ongoing use.

Foldable Gasket for Battery EVs

Freudenberg Sealing Technologies (Weinheim, Germany) is offering a new type of foldable gasket for battery electric vehicles. A segmented aluminum carrier with multiple sealing profiles on the outer edge provides strength while also integrating plastic retention fixtures. These are used to attach the gasket quickly and efficiently to the battery housing cover. The carrier segments are interconnected with a continuous sealing profile that is highly flexible. This way it can compensate for small manufacturing tolerances in the housing. As a result, the foldable gasket helps make the battery system more reliable and durable. Its simple disassembly also makes it easy to service and repair the battery. This benefits both the vehicle owners and the environment: Instead of having to replace the battery, it can be reused.
