At Automate 2024, Denmark-based Mobile Industrial Robots (MiR) showcased its latest MiR1200 Pallet Jack — an AI-powered autonomous mobile robot (AMR) solution that works smart and efficiently alongside human employees and like human employees, revolutionizing material handling operations in industrial settings.
Traditional AMR pallet jacks often encounter limitations in pallet detection, leading to transportation bottlenecks and missed picks. The MiR1200 Pallet Jack’s AI-powered pallet detection system overcomes these challenges by enabling rapid and precise recognition of pallets, even when covered with stretch wrap or when not being placed in the correct position. This system continually updates its path planner while on the move, ensuring reliable performance and minimizing failed picks. Customers benefit from consistent throughput, reduced pick and place times, and lower operating costs.
“It has five cameras and 300-degrees coverage. Most AMRs in the market use LiDAR scanners so their pallet jack needs to know exactly where the pallet is whereas if we move the pallet anywhere, because of the camera and the intelligence in the algorithm it will adjust and carry it,” said Jean-Pierre Hathout, the President of MiR.
“The technology is developed in-house with the compute facility of NVIDIA and it is future proof. Currently it’s floor-to-floor carrying, but because of the intelligence and compute facility, we can also have it floor-to-shelf carry in the next generation. Because of its machine-learning capability, we can teach it to carry anything — from bins to boxes based on customer needs,” Hathout added.
Many AMR pallet jacks struggle to withstand the rigors of industrial environments, leading to unforeseen repair costs and operational disruptions. The MiR1200 Pallet Jack’s industrial-grade components and rugged design ensure reliability in challenging conditions. With an IP52 rating, it navigates through diverse environments with minimal downtime and maintenance, offering a solution for varied conditions, surfaces, and obstacles while minimizing total cost of ownership.
In dynamic industrial environments, many AMRs often face challenges navigating through cluttered spaces. The MiR1200 Pallet Jack utilizes 3D object detection to efficiently navigate through obstacles, reducing the risk of equipment and product damage. By recognizing and avoiding obstacles around and up to the full height of the robot, it is able to analyze it surroundings while navigating and when placing pallets, it avoids forks from other manual vehicles, ensuring time savings, enhanced quality, and improved safety in complex environments.
Safety is paramount in industrial environments, and most companies are looking to replace their traditional injury-prone forklifts and trucks with safer solutions. Like the rest of MiR’s extensive range of AMR’s, the MiR1200 Pallet Jack prioritizes safety with advanced 360-degree safety features. Compliant with ISO3691-4:2023 standards, this intelligent robot ensures a safe working environment for employees. With its comprehensive safety measures, including obstacle detection, collision avoidance, and emergency stop capabilities, the MiR1200 provides peace of mind while enhancing operational efficiency.
