Laser Immersion Probe

A new type of laser-based immersion probe, which the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT (Aachen, Germany) is testing as part of BMBF- and EU-funded projects with industrial partners and users, could pave the way for continuous inline monitoring of water treatment processes in wastewater treatment plants. The 2D fluorescence measurement method generates spectroscopic data directly on site in the clarifier. In conjunction with intelligent evaluation software, this process is the key to energy- and resource-efficient water treatment.

ST BrightSense Image Sensor

STMicroelectronics (Geneva, Switzerland) has introduced a set of plug-and-play hardware kits, evaluation camera modules and software that ease development with its ST Bright-Sense global-shutter image sensors. The ecosystem lets developers of mass-market industrial and consumer applications ensure superior camera performance by designing-in ST BrightSense image sensors. By sampling all pixels simultaneously, unlike a conventional rolling shutter, global-shutter sensors can capture images of fast-moving objects without distortion and significantly reduce power when coupled to a lighting system.

Phantom Camera Control Application

PCC 3.9 software is now available from Vision Research (Wayne, NJ) incorporating new features and improvements including: The speed of all mp4 file conversions has been improved, averaging 5× faster than previous PCC versions when converting Cine Raw files. A new image processing control has been added called “bit slider” which provides fine control of shadows and highlights. A new MME file export is available during file save or file conversion. This is a metadata file used with certain image analysis programs and is formatted according to the ISO 13499 standard.

Laser Cutting Battery Separator Foils

Luxinar (Kingston Upon Hull, UK) is highlighting the benefits of laser cutting battery separator foils at the Laser EMobility Workshop. The company presented its laser sources that can shape battery cells and refine electronic components as part of the conference program that was held from 17 to 18 July in Munich, Germany. Separator foils are made from plastic film at thicknesses below 30μm; they are cut to length mainly by mechanical cutters and prohibit short circuits between the electrically charged layers of electrodes. Newer developments of battery separator foils utilize a thin layer of ceramic coating applied to one side of the film.

High Speed Spectral Imager

Specialised Imaging (Pitstone, UK) has introduced a new version of its market-leading SIM family of ultra high-speed framing camera that makes hyperspectral imaging simpler with the option of user interchangeable filters. Though hyperspectral imaging was possible on previous models, the new SIM design was driven by requests from the field of energetic materials research which required a camera with simple and fast exchange of filters in all its operating channels.

Wafer Stages for Thin Film Metrology

With the development of a multi-axis piezo wafer nanopositioning stage in an innovative hybrid kinematics configuration, PI (Auburn, MA) expands the system options for wafer platforms with four independent degrees of freedom: Tip, Tilt, Z and rotation around Z. Loading and unloading is performed by an integrated wafer lift. The hybrid kinematics configuration features unique piezo actuators for high-precision Z-axis motion. These provide fast step-and-settle over long travel ranges as well as real-time dynamic motion over small areas.
