Blade Battery 2.0 Flash Charging

BYD (Shenzhen, China) has developed FLASH Charging, delivering up to 1500kW through a single connector, and the second generation of its Blade Battery. Together, the two new technologies deliver remarkable recharging speeds, regardless of the conditions. A 10 percent to 70 percent refill takes as little as five minutes, while 10 percent to 97 percent requires only nine minutes. Even when the temperature is -30°C (-22°F), conditions that would normally result in a drastic reduction in charging speeds, the FLASH Charger can take a Blade Battery 2.0 from 20 percent to 97 percent in only 12 minutes. And the Blade Battery itself is capable of longer distances on a single charge; thanks to a 5 percent gain in energy density. To achieve this while retaining safety and durability, BYD developed a ‘FlashPass’ Ion Transport System that pushes the boundaries of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries with AI-driven optimization to deliver high ionic conductivity.

Battery Diagnostic Function E-SCAN

Mahle’s (Stuttgart, Germany) E-SCAN battery diagnostics has received battery health approval from CARA (Car Remarketing Association Europe). The certificate confirms that the reliable assessment of the battery condition of electric vehicles by Mahle complies with European quality standards. E-SCAN comes pre-installed as a standard function on the Mahle diagnostic devices TechPRO and CONNEX. It reads battery parameters such as the State of Health (SoH) directly via the vehicle’s standardized EOBD (European In-Board Diagnostic) interface and evaluates them based on the original manufacturer data. This is done in just two minutes, without time-consuming test drives. Analyses of battery health are crucial, among other things, for determining the resale value of used vehicles, as the high-voltage battery can account for up to 60 percent of the vehicle´s total value. With the E-SCAN certification now in place, Mahle offers repair shops, fleet operators, and used car dealers a significant competitive advantage.

Large-Scale Battery Storage Project

ADS-TEC Energy (Nürtingen, Germany) is partnering with the public utility Stadtwerke Mühlacker for the installation of a large-scale battery storage system at its substation in Mühlacker, providing 10MW of power and a storage capacity of 20MWh. ADS-TEC Energy is managing the planning, implementation, and integration of the system, which is part of a long-term strategy to enhance the area’s energy infrastructure. The project comprises four battery storage containers based on the BESS5000 system, with all development, system integration, and operating concepts carried out in Germany. This approach enables a high level of control and planning reliability, which is a key factor for municipal operators making significant long-term investments. The system is designed to balance loads and shift energy over time. As well as supporting the grid, this creates new revenue opportunities, for example, in the electricity market.

FaultBreak Contactor to Advance EV Safety and Reliability

Sensata (Swindon, United Kingdom) announced the launch of its FaultBreak contactor, a next-generation high-voltage switching and protection solution engineered to improve fault-clearing performance, enhance safety, and simplify electric vehicle power systems. FaultBreak’s passive and resettable fuse function enables robust protection against high-magnitude fault currents, reducing system cost, weight, and complexity while enhancing serviceability. FaultBreak delivers fault-clearing capability validated up to 16kA at 1kV and operates with low contact resistance for minimal power loss. This performance helps OEMs protect their systems against dangerous faults, including full battery short circuit conditions. FaultBreak further improves vehicle safety through passive fuse functionality that interrupts faults without reliance on external detection electronics. For applications that require an added level of protection, the contactor can be paired in a dual configuration to create system-level redundancy. By combining the functions of a fuse and a contactor in a single device, FaultBreak reduces component count, weight, and thermal losses compared to conventional contactor and fuse solutions.
