From Vape Waste to Sound Waves: A Quirky Look at Lithium Battery Reuse

A group of creators is turning discarded vape devices into quirky musical instruments—highlighting an unexpected battery story hiding in plain sight. While the project is playful, it underscores a real issue in the battery ecosystem: millions of lithium cells are thrown away in single-use electronics despite still having usable life, raising fresh questions about e-waste, reuse, and how we handle small-format batteries at scale.

00:00:03 The way we designed these instruments made it sound like a squeaky toy. It makes a really goofy, squeaky sound. I feel like it sounds like a dying robot kazoo. It sounds like

00:00:15 every other synthesizer before you make it fancy. That's a very you answer. This is the vape synthesizer that we made. and we use specifically this version of the vape and we use

00:00:27 all of the parts that originally came from this vape. Basic parts of the circuit are a five, five, five timer. That's sort of like the brains that make it oscillate. However many buttons

00:00:38 we choose to add, wire the buttons. And then we essentially take the battery and just hook up the plus and minus to power the whole thing when we're ready.

00:00:48 It won't turn on until you actually activate the sensor. The goal was to use as much as we could out of vape. That means we're using the original low pressure sensor.

00:00:57 So in order to play this, you actually have to suck rather than blow. Because it's single use, the batteries tend to outlive the use of the device, which means people are throwing away

00:01:26 we presented this, it was through this organization called Open Source Hardware Association. And basically with them we were able to open source this and share the instruction

00:01:37 on how people can make their own vape synthesizer. We are using this project as a call for an action for all the creative reuse and creative salvage, of used electronics.

00:01:47 hacked into it, disconnected element, and, nicotine cartridge. And we're basically using that same design to instead of turning on a heating element,

00:01:47 we're turning on a simple Forest Mimms inspired 555 oscillator, which generates tones and we kind of modded it so the buttons can change the tone. What else? What else was there

00:01:48 the three of us about. instruments are fully, like, rechargeable. And the original use of it is that you finish using the nicotine juice and then you throw it away.

00:01:48 And what inspired us to make this salvaged instrument is to, put this back up in the manufacturing chain and give it another life. I'm just going to hold it like this.
