Today, DOE Secretary Steven Chu announced the investment of up to $6.4 million (including $4.6 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act) for advancing research and development of next generation high-efficiency lighting.

Four projects were selected in response to DOE's solicitation to national laboratories for solid-state lighting (SSL) core technology research. These selections focus on improving the efficiency and quality of solid-state white light sources, and are expected to fill key technology gaps in both LED and OLED technologies.

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (Richland, WA) seeks to develop new, stable materials for high-efficiency blue OLEDs. PNNL will receive $1.0 million.

National Renewable Energy Laboratory (Golden, CO) will seek to demonstrate the viability of high bandgap gallium indium phosphide alloys for synthesis of inexpensive, efficient green LED devices. Sandia National Laboratories (Albuquerque, NM) seeks to improve the efficiency of green LEDs by growing on gallium nitride substrates. U.S. ARMY Research Laboratory (Adelphi, MD) plans to exploit the negative polarization charge at the active region to achieve efficient green LEDs. These three laboratories will each receive $1.8 million.
