altOSRAM Opto Semiconductors (Regensburg, Germany) has introduced a continuous wave laser offering thermal resistance of 2.5 K/W, an output of up to 6W, and a footprint measuring 6.0mm × 4.5 mm. It emits light at a wavelength of 810 nm through a prism that directs the laser’s light upwards. These capabilities allow the CW laser to be placed in any location on a circuit board. Operating temperature ranges from -40° to 100°C and the thermal conductivity of its base allows the laser unit to be soldered directly onto a metal core board. The system is suitable for volume applications such as night vision systems, closed circuit television, traffic monitoring, and medical applications.
