Newport Corporation (Irvine, CA) has introduced the 1830-R Optical Power Meter. A newly designed optical meter, the 1830-R provides a ‘drop-in’ replacement for Newport’s legacy 1830-C Power Meter, which has been widely used in fiber optic component production and testing. The DC power measurements can be viewed in the 7-segment, backlit LED display. Units of W, dBm, dB, and relative measurement can be displayed in the 4½ digit, wide- angle view. A wide dynamic range is provided with power sensitivities down to 10 pW and full scale readings up to 2W (detector dependent). The unit’s built-in, audible beeping tone changes its frequency as a function of incident optical power, making it very useful when optimizing the optical beam alignment. Other features include a USB 2.0 interface (Model 1830-R) and additional IEEE-488 (GPIB)/RS232C outputs (Model 1830-R-GPIB). The enhanced 1830-R (-GPIB) Optical Power Meters are hot-swappable among detectors. The ultraviolet (UV), silicon (Si), germanium (Ge), or indium gallium arsenide (InGaAs) detectors operate in the 200-1800 nm wavelengths.
