Fiber Optic Cables

OFS (Norcross, GA) has expanded its AccuRibbon® DC Fiber Optic Cable product family to include fiber counts up to 864. Currently, AccuRibbon DC cables are offered in fiber counts up to 432. Super-absorbent polymer (SAP) tapes replace the gel in AccuRibbon DC cables to impede water migration in the cable core. These cables and water-blocking tapes have a 15-year, field- proven history in diverse outside plant (OSP) installations and applications. In addition to meeting Telcordia GR-20 Issue 4 requirements, the AccuRibbon DC cables have successfully met OFS’ aggressive coiling simulations where the cables are twisted and coiled under real-world installation conditions.

Ultraviolet Spectrophotometer Systems

The newest VUVAS spectrophotometer systems from McPherson (Chelmsford, MA) can be equipped with integrated digital mass flow controls (MFC) that add patented, precise thermal sensing and flow rate control capability with set point accuracy. These can consistently improve measurement results. Photochemical deposition of organic films, caused by UV light's high energy, can be reduced or eliminated with inert gas purging. Digital control of the purge environment in UV optical systems delivers more stable and reproducible results.

Fiber Optic Transmission System

Liteway, Inc. (Hicksville, NY) has introduced the new Luxlink® fiber optic transmission system designed to transmit GPS NMEA and 1 pps signals over a single optical fiber in a linear distribution system. The GPSX-1001 consists of a small configurable module that accepts a standard electrical NMEA signal (in either RS-232 or RS-422 format) as well as a 1 pps signal from a GPS source. It then multiplexes these together and converts them into modulated light for transmission over a multimode or single-mode fiber to a second GPSX-1001 that is user configured as a receiver/repeater. The signal is de-multiplexed and converted back into electrical signals as well as a second optical signal for transmission to another GPSX-1001 receiver/repeater.

Fiber to Fiber Coupler

A new Fiber to Fiber Coupler (FFC) from Coherent (formerly Optoskand AB) (Santa Clara, CA) enables the use of replaceable, process fiber optic cables so that integral components of the fiber laser – most notably the feeding fiber – are not exposed to opto-mechanical damage, even in harsh industrial processes. Damage to the feeding fiber means long and often costly down time. The FFC is an eye-safe, stand-alone, water-cooled photonic component that handles laser power levels of 12 kW. A range of options enables coupling between fibers of different core diameters, as well as commonly used connector interfaces (QB, QD and Q5).

HDMI Color Camera

Aven’s (Ann Arbor, MI) Mighty Cam HDMI Color Camera has integrated measurement software and an SD card, allowing precise quality control inspection without a computer. Engineers, inspectors and research technicians simply need a monitor, as the camera’s HDMI port allows a direct link. Users can save five sets of measurement data on the SD card, which simplifies comparisons and record-keeping. Features also include a calibration scale, crosshair grid for quick gauging, edge detection and individual RGB contrast adjustments. Video is captured at 30 frames per second on the built-in 4G memory card.

Machine Vision Laser Modules

LASER COMPONENTS (Bedford, NH) recently will introduced a new generation of line laser modules for machine vision. The M18 threaded MV18 module is the latest addition to the MV series, while existing models like MVnano, MVpico and MVfemto have been re-engineered for better functionality and flexibility. Features include: new focusing mechanism for stable beam positioning and low line positioning drift; new focusing options to match line thickness and depth of focus; COS4 correction for homogenous line performance in applications with a wide field of view; and optics-only versions for integration in camera systems.

1MP Electron-Multiplying CCD Camera

Princeton Instruments (Trenton, NJ) has introduced the ProEM-HS:1KBX3-10μm 1 megapixel, 10 μm x 10 μm pixels EMCCD camera. This addition to the ProEM®-HS product line utilizes both low-noise readout electronics and Princeton Instruments’ patented eXcelon®3 (X3) fringe-suppression technology to deliver single-photon sensitivity. The ProEM-HS:1KBX3-10μm delivers 30 fps at full 1024 x 1024 pixel resolution and <1 e- rms effective read noise, all at 36.67 MHz readout speed. Its custom CCD readout mode is specially designed to deliver more than 4,800 fps with reduced ROI, whereas its special kinetics mode delivers more than 119,000 spectra/sec.
