Machining System

GEFERTEC GmbH, Berlin, Germany, offers the GTarc Machine, which is available as a 3-axis version for parts up to 3 m3, and as a 5-axis version for parts up to 0.8 m3. The center is suited for the production of complex and large parts made of steel, nickel, titanium, or aluminum. The system uses 3DMP® manufacturing technology for production of near-net-shape metal parts. It is based on electric arc welding, using wire as original material, so the final part is formed welding layer by welding layer. Production speed can be up to 600 cm3 per hour, depending on the material. 3DMP® CAM software calculates the data out of the CAD-modeled part, enabling the CNC-control unit to position the welding head; the machine produces the part fully automatically.

Tebis America, Troy, MI, announced Release 5 of Version 4.0 CAD/CAM software that enables users to accelerate processes without functional restrictions. Examples include machine simulation, working with tool sets, or searching for tools in feature machining. The software largely automates NC programming using templates with process libraries that enable procedures and processes. Users can also edit large and complex parts. Multicore technology relying on parallel processing was integrated. The extended parallel processing saves time in the calculation of NC programs for re-roughing. Displacement Sensors

The optoNCDT 1420 laser sensors from Micro-Epsilon, Raleigh, NC, enable dynamic measurements of displacement, distance, and position on a non-contact, wear-free basis with up to 4 kHz. The measurement task can be selected using a quality slider, and can be further optimized using the video signal display, signal peak selection, and individually adjustable signal averaging. The ROI function (region of interest) allows for interfering signals in the background to be filtered out. The sensors are suited for electronics production, packaging, medical engineering, and machine building.

Inserts for Plastics

SPIROL International, Danielson, CT, introduced the Series 60 Blind-End and Series 61 Through-Hole molded-in inserts for plastics made from 2024 grade aluminum. The design consists of axial grooves to maximize torque resistance, combined with radial undercuts for high pull-out force. The inserts are designed to be placed in the mold cavity prior to plastic injection, and offer unrestricted plastic flow into the retention features on the outside diameter of the inserts. They are lead-free, and standard inch thread sizes include 8-32, 10-24, 1/4-20, and 5/16-18.
