The National Polar-orbiting Operational Environment Satellite System (NPOESS) is a $6-billion, multi-year program with Northrop Grumman Space Technology (NGST) that will replace existing civilian and military weather satellites with a single national system to satisfy civil and national security requirements for remotely sensed meteorological, oceanographic, climatic, and space environmental data. The first of a planned total of six satellites is scheduled to be launched in 2009. U.S. agencies involved in the NPOESS program include NASA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration NOAA), and the Department of Defense.

Northrop Grumman selected the SCS750 single-board computer (SBC) for spacecraft control and payload data management for the NPOESS. The SBC will enable NGST to manage the high-speed data requirements of a satellite with one SBC. Each satellite will require a total of six SBCs to perform spacecraft control and data management. The space-qualified board features IBM PowerPCC750FX processors running at 800 MHz.
