Researchers from the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) have developed a new sensor system that detects quickly and nondestructively the risk of corrosion in the concrete structure of the buildings. The information provided allows engineers to anticipate well in advance any action deemed necessary, while reducing the costs of repair and maintenance.

The system incorporates pulse voltammetry equipment, which identifies corrosion at each point of the sensor network, and uses software for analysis of the electrical response of each sensor. Among its advantages are reduction in the time and cost necessary to diagnose the structure, and the ability to record in real time the condition and rate of corrosion of reinforcements in various parts of the structure, even in inaccessible areas. The system could be installed in both new and restored structures.
