The Simple Subset Wizard (SSW) was developed for the Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) to simplify the myriad ways of ordering or obtaining subsets of satellite data from EOSDIS’ different data centers. It provides a simple, coherent interface to a variety of subsetters at ten of the centers. The SSW has an additional advantage in shortening the user’s work-flow to obtain subsets by handling the search for individual files (and subsequent selection) behind the scenes.

Spatial and variable subsetting services are offered by nearly all of the EOSDIS Data Centers, but still appear to be underutilized. They are only loosely integrated with search, if at all; the user interfaces are all different; and some user interfaces are not user friendly for subsetting. The SSW unites search and the various subsetters into a single, simple, seamless process. The SSW consists of a bare-bones front-end, using OpenSearch to query the EOS Clearing for granules, and then individual Subset Agents to submit requests to ten out of the 12 EOSDIS Data Centers. As a result, the user need no longer go through a multistep process of searching for granules, selecting, then subsetting.
