A new dielectric fluid technology has potential benefits in liquid-filled power distribution transformers: improved oil stability, longer transformer life, and higher biodegradability. In addition, specific technology packages offer better oxidative performance, and higher flash and fire points than mineral oil. The proprietary fluid formulations and blends are based on soybean oil, vegetable oils, or synthetic esters.
Six specific fluid formulations exist, along with patent applications, issued patents, and technology and processing expertise. The different packages offer three platforms: commodity soy-based solutions with DuPont proprietary stabilizer; vegetable oil plus refined hydrocarbon oil with DuPont proprietary stabilizer; or blends of synthetic esters and high-oleic soy plus DuPont proprietary stabilizer. Each option can be tailored for regional requirements.
