Today's vehicles feature traditional internal combustion engines, hybrid, plugin, and electric drivetrains. A reader asks: "Which power-plant choice will take the lead in 2020?"

The power-plant variety is driving the development of powertrains, or how power is transferred from a car's engine to its wheels. OEMs must continue to create multiple powertrain designs to adapt to rapidly changing consumer demands.

In this week's webinar presentation, titled "The Powertrain Revolution," a Tech Briefs attendee asked Sirisha Lavu, Product Manager at the power-systems manufacturer TE Connectivity:

"How do you see the breakdown of power-plant choice one year from now, and in 2020?"

Sirisha Lavu, Product Manager, Hybrid and Electric Mobility Solutions, TE Connectivity: I think, one year from now, it will still be a mix. It will not be a completely electric powertrain; it could be more of a plug-in situation. There is still some anxiety that we need to overcome as consumers. We still have the range anxiety. A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) will illuminate that in the near future. I think that the plug-in hybrids will be the power plant choice, at least for within the year. For 2020, I'm thinking it will mostly be the EVs.
