The Ocean Cleanup, a nonprofit effort begun by Dutch inventor Boyan Slat, wants to clean up 50% of “The Great Pacific Garbage Patch” in five years, with the aim of a 90% reduction by 2040.
Using a 600-meter long floater, or collection platform, called System 001, the Cleanup technology acts a kind of underwater Roomba. The floater keeps plastics from flowing over the system, while a 3-meter skirt stops debris from escaping underneath.
What do you think? Can ‘The Ocean Cleanup’ Clean Up the Ocean?
