A recent video on Tech Briefs TV highlighted NASA’s new idea for aircraft: the STARC-ABL. The concept under development aims to bridge the gap between current jet fuel-powered aircraft and future all-electric vehicles.

The plane relies on turboelectric propulsion, meaning that the aircraft uses electric motors powered by onboard gas turbines. Two traditional jet engines are mounted under the wings, which also contain electric generators. Electrical power is then sent to the tail of the aircraft, where an all-electric propulsor reduces drag. (Watch the demo on Tech Briefs TV.)
