An INSIDER story this month highlighted efforts to use sensors to improve the virtual design model known as a digital twin.

The team from MIT and the Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences tested out their idea on an unpiloted aerial vehicle (UAV), using state-of-the-art sensing capabilities and supercomputers to create the new-and-improved structural representation, or digital twin.

The research could help make the use of digital twins more widespread, says Karen Willcox, MIT visiting professor and director of the Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin.

“We could imagine a digital twin of just about any system," Willcox told Tech Briefs.
