Embedded Systems Design (Elkridge, MD) has released the StreamBlade™ SOE-4, a short form FPGA-based PCI board designed to process real-time streaming data. The device uses Ethernet to implement a distributed computer backplane and uses the PCI bus solely for power, configuration, and control.

This enables developers to take advantage of its two Xilinx Virtex-4 FX60 FPGAs or two Xilinx Virtex-4 FX100 FPGAs. The SOE-4 supports four independent 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports, two for each FPGA; plus four, 40-pin ATA connectors, which provide direct user-configurable access to both FPGAs. With two 8MB banks of ZBT SRAM and two 128MB banks of DDR2 SDRAM per FPGA, developers can use the SOE-4 as a quad PPC405 processing board, a pure FPGA processing board, or for combined hardware/software boundary processing.

The boards are delivered with the SOE-4 Development Kit, which is compliant with Xilinx EDK 8.2i and includes sample applications. System-on-FPGA (SoFPGA) reference designs are provided, including cores for DDR2 SDRAM control. The development kit also includes Linux PCI device drivers and host utilities for loading FPGA bit streams and PPC405 elf files into SOE-4 flash memory.
