Waste Connections, Inc. is an integrated solid waste services company that provides solid waste collection, transfer, disposal, and recycling services in mostly exclusive and secondary markets. They serve over two million residential, commercial, and industrial customers from a network of operations in 29 states. The company is headquartered in Folsom, CA and its Cold Canyon Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in San Luis Obispo, CA processes about 650 tons of curbside and commercial recycling per week — separating various plastic, glass, metal, and paper materials and baling them for shipment to market.

New LED high-bay fixtures light up the Cold Canyon Material Recovery Facility.
In a move to improve lighting quality and safety at the Cold Canyon MRF, the company upgraded its lighting system with Cree-powered Xeralux light-emitting diode (LED) high-bay fixtures. The Xeralux fixtures feature Cree XLamp® XP-G LEDs, helping Waste Connections reduce its energy costs by almost two-thirds and nearly eliminating its maintenance costs.

The XLE-HB replaced over 80 400-W metal halide lamps, sockets, and ballasts in the facility
The XLamp XP-G LED delivers up to 493 lumens at 93 lumens per watt when driven at 1.5 A and has over 10,000 LM-80 long-term testing data and a TM-21 reported lifetime of greater than 60,000 hours. The LEDs have a 3.45-mm x 3.45-mm package and are available in all correlated color temperatures (CCTs) and high color rendering index (CRI).

“Our previous lighting technology didn’t deliver the high quality light our facility needed,” said John Ryan, Facilities Manager at Cold Canyon. “Now, not only do we seem to have more light, but we also have a brighter, whiter light that is very pleasing. The employees love it. Less energy, better light, and beats our internal rate of return target – the Xeralux retrofit is a great choice.”

The Xeralux Light Engine for High Bay (XLE-HB) replaced more than 80 400-W metal halide lamps, sockets, and ballasts. According to Waste Connections’ analysis of site energy consumption, the Cold Canyon MRF is now saving 260-285 kWh per day, translating to over $13,000 a year. As a result, Waste Connections anticipates a payback time of less than three years and the virtual elimination of maintenance.

The XLE-HBs have a ten-year lifetime, and feature full spectrum white light in multiple correlated color temperature (CCT) options from 2700K-6000K and high color rendering with 70-95 CRI options that improves visibility and safety. A highly engineered thermal management system efficiently conducts heat from the LED junction to ambient air.

High-bay lighting is often challenging for industrial and commercial property owners due to its high energy consumption and the high lumen output requirements. The Cree XLamp LEDs allowed Xeralux to deliver high-quality, low maintenance fixtures.
