Bosch Sensortec (Reutlingen, Germany) has introduced the BMA280 and BMA255 triaxial acceleration sensors with 14-bit and 12- bit resolutions, respectively. The sensors are available in a 2 × 2 mm LGA package and measure changes in acceleration as low as 0.25 milli-g. They feature a low noise level of 120 micro-g/vHz for the BMA280, and 150 microg/ vHz for the BMA255.

The sensors require only 130 micro amps even at maximum data rate, and have an enhanced interrupt engine. The integrated interrupt engine enables them to automatically identify specific motion patterns. Both sensors can detect whether the device has stopped moving for a definable period of time. A FIFO buffer enables the sensor to buffer measurement data independently until it is required by the system. This reduces the application processor’s data polling frequency, and reduces the system’s power consumption.
