SCHUNK (Morrisville, NC) has combined a linear motor drive with a pre-loaded roller guide for its ELB linear axis. The module is able to position high loads with accuracy of 0.01 mm. The maximum acceleration is 100 ms-2, and the maximum speed is 4 ms-1. The driving force (maximum: 150 N) is transmitted directly and without gears to the slide by the play-free junction roller guide. The module comes in three stroke versions: 50 mm, 75 mm, and 125 mm. As an option, it can be equipped with an incremental stroke measuring system (sine/cosine interface) or with an absolute displacement encoder (Hiperface or SSI interface). An absolute-value transducer eliminates the need for complex reference runs when starting up the plant and after emergency stops. In addition, the module does not need end or reference sensors.

The unit is controlled either by the Bosch Rexroth IndraDrive controller or by the Siemens SINAMICS inverter. By using standard controller interfaces, the module can be integrated into higher-level control systems. As an option, the short-stroke axis can be equipped with a pneumatic load-balancing system or with a holding brake for use as a Z axis.
