Mitsui Seiki (Franklin Lakes, NJ) offers the HU100-TS 100 tilt-spindle, 5-axis, horizontal machining center for large, hard-metal workpieces that are better suited for tilt-spindle processing than trunnion table operations. The machine’s fixed table and tilting head arrangement facilitates production of heavier and larger parts and can permit use of shorter, more rigid tooling. It can machine tough materials such as titanium and Inconel that are common in aerospace, power generation, and other high-value applications. Motor Starters

Crydom DRMS Series hybrid motor starters from Sensata Technologies (Swindon, UK) integrate the benefits of both solid-state and electromechanical relay technologies to produce a compact device that can control electrical power delivery to motors as large as 4kW. Suitable applications include packaging equipment, industrial process controls, and machine tooling systems. The starters include soft start, soft stop, and an internal mains disconnect relay in case of a fault. The soft start/soft stop function allows for the gradual increase or decrease of power control. Built-in overload protection eliminates an additional overload relay. Other features include forward/reverse, adjustable settings for starting/deceleration torque, starting/deceleration ramp, nominal motor current, and a reset button on the front of the unit for external manual reset. Long-Travel Stages

piezosystem jena (Hopedale, MA) introduced the SCANIUStwo XY piezo-based long-travel stage based on piezoelectric ultrasonic motors that provide permanent frictional connection between drive and output. The movements of the table are consistent, while the moving axis is prevented from slipping. The table does not create any electromagnetic fields. The table offers travel speed of up to 160 mm/s with a resolution of 40 nm, and travel range of 150 mm in the X-axis and 72 mm in the Y-axis. The overall height is less than 35 mm. Loads of up to 3 kg are handled by the cross XY table.

Position Sensor

The posichron® PCFP25 from ASM Sensors (Elmhurst, IL) is a non-contact, ultra-flat magnetostrictive position sensor for space-restricted applications such as in mobile machines. The wear-free sensor has measurement ranges from 100 mm to 5,750 mm and consists of a magnetostrictive waveguide and a moveable position magnet. The sensor is resistant to dirt, moisture, and dust and resists shocks up to 50 g with IP67 protection. Analog and digital outputs are available. The sensor reaches a linearity up to ±0.02% f.s. Rotary Encoders

The ENI58PL series incremental rotary encoders from Pepperl+Fuchs (Twinsburg, OH) offers IO-Link that enables custom configuration. IO-Link allows users to adjust the device according to the application and reconfigure it if there are changes to production and process flows. A variety of shaft, flange, and output options are available. It can be configured via Pepperl+Fuchs SmartBridge®, IO-Link master, or offline via PACTware. Existing hardware and software can be used to define voltage output level for short and long cable lengths with high or low frequencies. The encoder offers resolution of up to 16,384 pulses per rotation, temperature range of -40 to +85 °C, IP65/67 protection, and resistance to shock and vibration.
