Positioning Device

ALIO Industries (Arvada, CO) released the HH-30D Hybrid Hexapod® 6-degrees-of-freedom nanopositioning device with 30-degree tip and tilt travel.

The design is comprised of a parallel kinematic tripod to deliver Z-plane and tip/tilt motion. The tripod is integrated with a monolithic serial kinematic stage for XY planar motion. A rotary stage integrated into the top of the tripod (or beneath, depending on application needs) provides 360-degree continuous yaw (Theta-Z) rotation.

In this hybrid design, individual axes can be customized to provide XY travel ranges from millimeters to virtually unlimited ranges while maintaining nanometer-levels of precision. Forward and inverse controller kinematics provide an unlimited number of programmable tool center point (TCP) locations.

The tripod design uses ballscrews driven by frameless servo motors with an upper joint design that provides the travel range in a self-nesting package.

Encoders

Applied Motion Products (Watsonville, CA) offers TruCount™ encoders that use a special energy harvesting technique to enable battery-less functionality. When power is removed from the motor and the shaft is free to turn, any movement of the motor shaft generates sufficient energy to power a dedicated electronic circuit that captures and retains the new encoder position. With the ability to track more than 65,000 revolutions of the motor shaft, the integrated drive electronics track the absolute position of the motor shaft over a large working range. There is no battery to monitor and replace.
