Wi-Fi Measures Indoor Movement
WIO is a software program, but researchers created a hardware prototype for initial testing with other devices.

Researchers from North Carolina State University developed a way to measure speed and distance in indoor environments. WiFi-assisted Inertial Odometry (WIO) uses WiFi as a velocity sensor to accurately track how far something has moved – like sonar but using radio waves rather than sound waves.

WIO works in conjunction with a device’s inertial measurement unit (IMU), correcting any errors and improving the accuracy of speed and distance calculations.
