Continuous Wave Diode Pumped Laser

Cobolt AB (Solna, Sweden) announces the release of a higher power model of the Cobolt Twist™ 457 nm on the 05-01 Series platform — up to 200 mW single-frequency CW. This continuous-wave single-frequency Diode Pumped Laser (DPL) operates at 457.0 nm in a perfect quality TEM00 beam (M2< 1.1). The wavelength and optical properties make it a good replacement for bulkier Ar+ lasers. The laser cavity design provides ultra-low noise performance of typically <0.2 % rms (over 20 Hz – 20 MHz and over 10 – 40°C), stable Single Longitudinal Mode (SLM) operation, intrinsically excellent wavelength stability, and immunity to optical feedback.

Laird (London, England) has designed a benchtop recirculating chiller for laser applications that require precise and continuous temperature control. In applications with a cooling capacity requirement below 400 Watts, the compact MRC series offers a size and weight advantage over conventional compressor-based systems. With a cooling capacity of up to 290 Watts, it can maintain the coolant at well below ambient. It is suited for a wide range of laser systems, including the diode-pumped solid state (DPSS) laser systems used for meticulous cutting in high-tech manufacturing processes and semiconductor wafer cutting. Other applications include medical laser systems for cutting human tissue in cosmetic treatments and for maintaining the temperature of imaging detector heads used in capturing high-resolution images of patients.

The new Falcon III low light camera from Raptor Photonics Ltd. (Larne, Northern Ireland) incorporates GEN III EMCCD sensor technology from e2v. It offers 1MP resolution with 10μm square pixels. A back-illuminated sensor offers a peak Quantum Efficiency (QE) of >95%, high sensitivity, and a total noise floor as low as 0.01 electrons readout noise. It is designed for an optimum combination of speed and sensitivity and is three times faster than previous generation EMCCDs. Up to 5000 × EM gain can be applied to the sensor using lower voltages, resulting in reduced sensor aging effects. The camera can be cooled to -100°C for low background events.

High-Resolution Imaging Spectrograph

Princeton Instruments (Trenton, NJ) is introducing the SpectraPro HRS-300, which is engineered to deliver both the spectral resolution and the astigmatism correction needed for advanced microspectroscopy and multichannel fiber applications. This 300 mm imaging spectrograph’s optical performance is optimized via a new spectral deconvolution, which can improve spectral resolution, peak intensities, and consistency across the 2D focal plane by as much as 60% with the push of a button.

Dual exit ports, each with a full 30 mm focal plane, permit mounting of two array detectors or enable the instrument to operate as both a monochromator and a spectrograph. It can also utilize up to three interchangeable triplegrating turrets and its new grating drive system improves wavelength accuracy and repeatability.

Multi-Wavelength Laser Light Engines

Coherent (Santa Clara, CA) has released a new family of flexible laser light engines, called OBIS CellX, that deliver up to four separate laser wavelengths from a single module, thereby lowering the complexity and overall cost of laser integration in multi-wavelength life sciences instruments such as flow cytometers. In this compact one-box source, the lasers, electronic control, and beam conditioning optics are all integrated in a single package with RS232/USB interfaces and an I/O connector. The TEM00 outputs can be aligned and positioned as needed for each specific instrument. A three-channel version has outputs at 405, 488, and 640 nm, and a four-channel engine also includes 561 nm. Output power per wavelength is 50 or 100 mW.
