VGA Sensor

Now available from FRAMOS (Ottawa, Canada), the Sony IMX426 Pregius™ 3rd generation Global Shutter CMOS image sensor provides 9μm pixel size and reaches VGA resolution with 1,449 fps@10-bit for maximized throughput in factory automation. Sony's IMX426 is a diagonal 9.2mm, 1/1.7 format type of imager with a square pixel pitch of 9μm for highly saturated and sensitive images. Using the advantages of Sony's 3rd generation features including the high-speed interface SLVS-EC, the sensor reaches a read-out speed up to 1,594 fps at 8-bit.

The IMX426 has a scalable bit depth of 8, 10, and 12 bits, and can be programmed for multiple regions of interest (ROI). It produces excellent image quality by featuring high/low conversation gain modes, dual triggering, dual ADC, and self-triggering. The chip operates with analog 3.3V, digital 1.2V, and interface 1.8V triple power supply, and has low power consumption.

Depth-Sensing Cameras

The Intel RealSense D400 product family, available from Mouser Electronics (Mansfield, TX), includes two depth-sensing cameras: the D415 and D435. Both incorporate the latest Intel RealSense Vision Processor D4 to handle the complex depth algorithm and use stereo image sensors to capture and calculate disparity between images. The D415 camera features a rolling shutter stereo camera pair, standard infrared (IR) projector and a full HD RGB camera suitable for stationary and slow-moving applications. The D435 camera features a global shutter stereo camera pair, wide IR projector and a full HD RGB camera. Both cameras offer a depth stream output resolution of up to 1280 × 720 px with a frame rate of 30 fps.

For higher volume embedded applications, Mouser also offers Intel's Vision Processor D4 and Depth Module D400 Series. The compact Vision Processor D4 computes high-resolution 3D depth maps in real time without requiring a dedicated GPU or host processor when paired with RealSense Depth Modules.

Global Shutter Image Sensors

OmniVision Technologies, Inc. (Santa Clara, CA) recently announced two new high-resolution additions to its family of global shutter image sensors—the 2-megapixel OG02B1B/ OG02B10 (monochrome/ color) and the OV9285. These new sensors are designed to be cost-effective solutions for a wide range of consumer and industrial machine vision applications.

Both versions of the OG02B1B/OG02B10 provide 1600 × 1300 resolution in a 1/2.9-inch optical format and a 15-degree chief ray angle (CRA) to support wide field-of-view lens designs. The OV9285 provides an even more cost-effective option, with a 1.48-megapixel or 1328 × 1120 resolution, the ability to capture video at 90 frames per second (FPS) and an optical format of 1/3.4-inch with a CRA of 9 degrees. Both sensors are built on OmniVision's 3 × 3-micron OmniPixel®3-GS pixel technology.

Goniophotometer

Instrument Systems (Munich, Germany) recently launched with the LGS 650 goniophotometer, a new measuring system for solid-state lighting products and LED modules. Designed for samples up to max. 1300 mm diameter and 10 kg weight, the LGS 650 goniophotometer was developed for the analysis of angle-dependent spatial radiation properties. The test specimen is operated in a horizontal burning position and measurements can be taken at an angular range of ±160° in the gamma axis. The angular resolution of 0.01° enables very fine measuring grids recorded with a high level of accuracy and reproducibility.

The LGS 650 is compliant with all relevant specifications in conformity with CIE, DIN and IES standards. The probes may have a diameter up to max. 1300 mm and a maximum weight of 10 kg. Combined with a spectroradiometer, e.g. CAS 140D, from Instrument Systems, all spectral quantities such as color coordinates, color temperature and even color rendering index can be determined as a function of angle.

Safety Laser Scanner

The new safety laser scanner, PSENscan, from Pilz (Canton, MI) safely monitors up to three separate zones simultaneously, significantly increasing plant productivity. Up to four safety laser scanners can be connected in series in accordance with the master-slave principle, which reduces the cabling and set-up work considerably.

The safety laser scanner offers two-dimensional area monitoring with a large opening angle of 275°, so applications in which several adjoining sides of a machine or AGV are to be monitored can be implemented with fewer devices when compared with an 180° scanner. Up to three separate zones can be monitored simultaneously and up to 70 switchable configurations can be set up. The software tool PSENscan Configurator is used to configure PSENscan. The Ethernet port is used to connect PSENscan to the configuration computer.

Light Section Sensors

The SmartRunner Matcher from Pepperl+Fuchs (Twinsburg, OH) is a compact, camera-based light section sensor that combines both the evaluation process and the interfaces in one device. The device features specially preconfigured firmware that enables it to specialize in extremely precise profile comparisons. After initial setup and configuration-the user inputs the required reference profile using the teach-in mode and the Matcher captures an image of each object's line profile. Using LEDs and a 2D camera, the SmartRunner Matcher compares the current profile to the taught-in reference profile.

In addition to the Matcher, Pepperl+Fuchs also introduces the SmartRunner Detector. This light section sensor is optimized for high-precision monitoring, detecting even the smallest of faults. The Detector reliably identifies objects with a minimum size of 0.25 mm in a trapeze-shaped measuring range with a width of 350 mm at a maximum range of 700 mm. Since the SmartRunner Detector evaluates both the laser line on the object as well as the background, the sensor results are always reliable.

Field of View Video Measurement System

Vision Engineering (New Milford, CT) announced the availability of its new class of TVM Field of View (FOV) video measurement systems. The TVM series includes TVM20 and TVM35, with FOV sizes of 20 mm and 35 mm respectively. Both systems are designed to meet rigorous quality assurance applications in electronics, automotive, aerospace, medical and plastics manufacturing. The fixed stage FOV system enables instant, accurate measurements of small pressed metal components, turned parts, injection moulded plastics, tubes and cables, while the addition of a manually-controlled stage extends measurement for larger components up to 200 mm × 100 mm.

Hyperspectral Camera

VTT's (Espoo, Finland) hyperspectral imager continues to observe the earth on board the Aalto-1 nanosatellite. The hyperspectral camera on Aalto-1 operates in a wavelength range of 500–900 nanometres and is half a cubesat unit (0.5U) in size, or 5 cm × 10 cm × 10 cm. While the camera is up in space, it has been possible to program the operation wavelengths from Earth, making it easy to scale the same camera hardware to enable different applications. The small camera is extremely rugged, surviving a grade X solar storm while still continuing to supply high-quality data.

Machine Vision Cameras

Teledyne DALSA (Waterloo, Ontario, Canada) recently introduced its newest Genie Nano cameras with eight new monochrome and color models built around SONY® image sensors. These industry-first 5-Gigabit GigE Vision cameras feature resolutions from 3.2 Mpixels to 12 Mpixels with more models to follow, including a 5 Mpixel polarized model. These new Genie Nano models also feature the brand new 5GBASE-T link speed. Frame rates range from 190 to 63 fps.

IEEE 802.3bz-2016 is the expanded standard for Ethernet over twisted pair copper wire at speeds of 2.5 Gbit/s and 5 Gbit/s. This creates intermediate speeds between existing standards 1 Gigabit Ethernet and 10 Gigabit Ethernet. The resulting standards are named 2.5GBASE-T and 5GBASE-T. 5GBASE-T technology allows Ethernet links to offer greater flexibility with new data rates of up to 5 Gbps over commonly deployed Cat5e cabling. The technology boosts data throughput of up to 100 meters through twisted pair copper cabling.

GigE Vision Cameras

LUCID Vision Labs, Inc. (Richmond, BC, Canada) recently announced the addition of new 3.2 MP and 5 MP polarization models to its Triton™ GigE Vision camera series. The 3.2 MP Triton camera features the 1/1.8” Sony IMX265 global shutter CMOS sensor running at 38 fps. The 5 MP polarization Triton models feature the 2/3 Sony IMX250MZR monochrome and the IMX250MYR color global shutter CMOS sensors running at 24 fps. The HAL-CMR-IP-POE-PTZ-20MP produces crisp 1080p full-HD high-resolution images day and night. Fixed Focal Length Lenses

Edmund Optics® (EO) (Barrington, NJ) has introduced the TECHSPEC®HPi (High Performance Instrumentation) Series for instrumentation imaging applications and the TECHSPEC® HPr (High Performance Ruggedized) Series of stability ruggedized lenses.

Laser Diode Driver

The ALPhANOV (Talence, France) laser diode driver range allows the users to get the best performance from their device while ensuring that it is protected at all times. The new product, called “Shaper,” completes this range by adding very high precision temporal pulse shaping capabilities between 500 ps and 2 μs with a repetition rate of up to 250 MHz, a temporal resolution of 500 ps and an intensity dynamic of 48 dB up to 2A.

The Shaper board includes a multifunctional synchronization unit with AWG (Arbitrary Waveform Generator), 3 built-in delay generators for synchronizing external instruments or other external laser amplifiers, and a TEC controller to regulate the temperature of the laser diode.

The driver is available in two versions: the “external modulation” version drives the laser diode with square waveforms and generates a shaping signal that is compatible with external devices such as acousto-optic or electro-optic modulators. The “direct modulation” version allows the pulse shape to be applied directly to the laser diode and a new functionality allows the user to remove spurious effects such as “gain switch” relaxation peaks.

SWIR Detectors

Sofradir-EC (Fairfield, NJ) has announced the availability of two new SWIR InGaAs sensors. The 640 × 512 VGA format detectors with 15-micron pixels are available in two versions: the SNAKE SW, a hermetically sealed metal package that includes an integral TEC (thermo-electric cooler), or the SNAKE SW TECless, a hermetically sealed ceramic package without a TE Cooler. Both detectors are designed for wavelengths ranging from 0.9 μm to 1.7 μm and boast low noise, fast frame rates up to 300Hz, excellent image quality and a pixel operability of >99.5%.

The Tecless version can be configured with or without an anti-reflective coated window providing the end user additional system architecture flexibility. Applicable for use in low earth orbit (LEO) systems, the SWIR detectors are compact, utilize very little power and are cost effective. In particular, the SNAKE SW Tecless has a footprint of only 0.65” × 0.65” and consumes <160 mW in output mode.

Fiber Optics Transmitter & Receiver

Link Electronics (Jackson, MO) introduced the PFO-100-T&R, a compact 3G/HD/SD-SDI or ASI fiber optics transmission system. This unit operates with single mode fiber optics cable or, multi-mode fiber optics cable.
