Non-Contact Meauring System

Marposs (Auburn Hills, MI) recently announced the availability of non-contact machine vision measuring systems able to detect the presence of defects such as porosity, scratches and depressions on the sealing surfaces of castings. These systems can be used to inspect any kind of housing, from the engine block of a traditional combustion engine to the housing of electric drive units (EDU) for electric vehicles. These systems, suited for in-process production lines, use robot-operated high-resolution cameras and grazing lights combined with stereo-photometric technique to inspect critical sections of the cast component. The Feret diameter of the defects, as well as the distance between defects, is measured to determine the concentration of anomalies on the surface. Geometric measurement of the component can also be accomplished.

Holotomography Microscope

An optical microscope utilizing incoherent light to generate holographic images of unlabeled live cells is now available from Tomocube (Daejeon, South Korea). Called HT-X1, the new microscope incorporates a 450 nm LED light source for transmitted light, together with a five-channel fluorescence filter engine, with any 3 of the channels being captured for overlaying. The large, motorized stage will easily accommodate 24-, 12- and 6-well plates and standard 35mm imaging dishes in the integrated incubator, which is equipped with a sealing lid to allow gassing and combines with a motorized laser-powered auto-focus module for accurate and repeatable monitoring of locations during long-term studies. A 40× 0.95 NA air objective lens allows rapid imaging of multiple locations with a lateral resolution of 156 nm. The extremely high numerical aperture also allows more illumination for fluorescence imaging while the large 160 × 160 micron field-of-view allows rapid and easy imaging of multiple locations.

Energy Dispersive Spectrometer

JEOL (Peabody, MA) introduced its latest Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS), the Gather-X. Gather-X, a windowless EDS for the JEOL IT800 series FE SEM features improved detection sensitivity for characteristic X-rays less than 1 keV and the ability to detect soft X-ray regions less than 100eV (Li-K). The unique electron trap design enables collection of the entire EDS range at beam voltages up to 30kV. A racetrack-shaped detector allows insertion at very short working distances while maintaining a large solid angle for efficient collection of high spatial resolution EDS maps. Higher count rates allow for fast collection times, minimizing potential beam damage with sensitive specimens. Gather-X operation is embedded within the SEM Center software for Live (Real-Time) display of EDS spectrum or maps with SEM imaging.
