Photonics Tech Briefs (PTB) recently presented the 2005 Readers’ Choice Products of the Year at a special awards dinner held at The Water Club in New York City. The top three products chosen by the readers of PTB were honored at the event.

The winners were chosen from a field of eight finalists, all of which were Products of the Month during 2005. In each issue of PTB, one product is chosen that has exceptional value to the greatest portion of our readers. That product is named Product of the Month. At the end of the year, those eight products were placed on a ballot, and our readers chose the products they felt were the most significant new products introduced to the photonics engineering community in 2005.

The top three winners were Eastman Kodak (Rochester, NY), Electrophysics (Fairfield, NJ), and Newport Corp. (Irvine, CA).

Eastman Kodak’s William Jackson, Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Image Sensors Solutions, accepted the Product of the Year award for Kodak’s KAC-3100 and KAC-5000 3- and 5-megapixel CMOS image sensors, which were Product of the Month last October. The sensors use Kodak’s Pixelux technology, a proprietary architecture that includes the use of low, dark-current pinned photodiodes, and four-transistor and shared-pixel CMOS architectures. The HotShot® thermography camera won Product of the Year honors for Electrophysics. Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Art Stout, accepted the award for the HotShot, which was PTB’s Product of the Month last July. The camera has integrated data logger functionality, and an icon-based user interface. An articulating thermal camera head enables framing of electrical and mechanical systems from floor level to overhead, while maintaining optimal viewing angle and hand position. A joystick control and LCD touchscreen facilitate identification of inspection point locations, incident information, and observation details for automatic incorporation into reports. Newport Corporation’s Tom Rigney, Senior Engineering Manager, accepted the Product of the Year Award for Newport Corp. for its SmartTable™ optical table. The table uses iQ Damping Technology™ to reduce resonant structural vibrations and settling time. Two active vibration dampers dissipate all natural vibration modes without creating any additional resonances of lower frequencies. If the load on the table changes, the dampers maintain their stability after an auto-tuning of control gains.
