In laser-drilling ceramic composites for applications such as cooling holes this technology creates a smooth bore that seals the composite’s reinforcing fibers and preserves the surface oxidation barrier of the composite. This tested technology overcomes the difficulties posed by conventional laser drilling with techniques that recast the composite into a glassy-walled hole, thus integrating reinforcement protection and an oxidation barrier into the drilled material. The technology has been successfully commercialized in the production of ceramic composite
parts for jet engines.
