Graphene Foam Detects Hazardous Gases

Fazel Yavari, a mechanical engineering student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, has developed a new sensor to detect extremely small quantities of hazardous gases such as ammonia and nitrogen dioxide. Made from a 3D foam of graphene - the world's thinnest material - this sensor is durable, inexpensive to make, and opens the door to a new generation of gas detectors. Yavari's sensor is ideal for use by bomb squads, defense, and law enforcement officials, and has applications in environmental monitoring.
