Portable Anthrax Diagnostic Device for Low-Resource Environments
BaDx (Bacillus anthracis Diagnostics) is a lab-in-a-pocket device to sample, sense, and diagnose bacteria that cause anthrax. It can accomplish these tasks in environments with no power, refrigerated storage, or laboratory equipment. BaDx was designed to be used with minimal or no training, and to keep handlers safe. The device resulted from a Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) project at Sandia National Laboratories to develop an anthrax detection device for low-resource environments. The technology has been licensed to Aquila, a small business that designs and manufactures technologies and services for nuclear security and international safeguards. With three different anthrax products already available from Aquila, the BaDx device can be quickly modified to tackle other emerging biothreats.
