Navy Deploys Side Scan Sonar Technology to Locate Air Asia Flight Wreckage
U.S. Navy divers from a Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit have deployed the Tow Fish side scan sonar system from 11-meter rigid hull inflatable boats that are operating from littoral combat ship USS Fort Worth. Fort Worth is supporting Indonesian-led search efforts to locate AirAsia Flight QZ8501 in the Java Sea. The divers manually place the sonar sensor into the water, where they systematically scan the ocean bottom looking for possible wreckage. The high-accuracy, real-time sonar images are reviewed by sailors aboard the ship who record images that might be of interest. U.S. Navy assets will remain on station as long as they can provide useful assistance to the search efforts. Indonesian searchers report that part of the tail of crashed AirAsia flight QZ8501 has recently been found in the Java Sea.
