Making Autonomous Vehicles Safe with Simulation

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and fully Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) are being actively developed across the world with their promise of reducing traffic fatalities, freeing up commute times, reducing congestion, and many other benefits. Before viable AVs can be brought to market, they must be demonstrated to be safe under a very wide range of conditions and scenarios that spans lighting conditions, traffic patterns, weather, pedestrian behavior, road surface variations, and more. AVs have to be validated for these different driving situations as they independently navigate in close vicinity to other road users. This task is impossible with road testing alone. Hence, most of the scenarios need to be validated through simulation.

It is crucial that simulations accurately represent reality. This 60-minute webinar discusses high-fidelity, physics-based simulations for developing many aspects of AVs including radar, lidar, camera and ultrasonic sensors, electronics, and semiconductors. In addition, full closed-loop simulation with software-in-the-loop (SIL) as well as hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) are examined. Further, model-based software development methods with certified automatic code generation are presented for developing various parts of the AV software stack. The webinar also discusses functional safety analysis and cybersecurity analysis methods and tools.
