Virtually all electronic control units (ECUs) used in transportation – this could be for engine control, Active Safety, or even climate control – employ various types of sensors to assess the environment they are working in, so they can make informed decisions on what functions to perform. These sensors monitor parameters such as temperature, humidity, altitude, or deceleration in the unfortunate case of a crash. The integrity of these sensors assures a safe journey, low emissions and a comfortable cabin.
When testing the individual control units, it is necessary to simulate the sensors that make the particular measurements required. Fortunately, most of these sensors are resistive in nature, and there are choices available to automate this portion of your test program. Automated sensor simulation using programmable resistors improves repeatability, reduce test times, and ultimately lower the cost of test.
