Today’s electric aircraft relies on configurations and technologies that are not even imagined for development of conventional aircraft. This new landscape is characterized by many architectural solutions that leverage electrical technologies in a variety of ways. This 90-minute Webinar from SAE International presents a panel of experts who will provide insight into this evolving area.

  • Pascal Thalin, Chair of SAE’s Electric Aircraft Steering Group, will offer an overview of the goals, challenges, and stakes for electric aircraft from differing perspectives. In his work, he is focused on delivering innovative, optimized solutions for electric aircraft and coordinating standardization activities related to them.
  • Dr. Michael Armstrong, Senior Director of Advanced Programs at Electric Power Systems and part of SAE’s Electric Aircraft Steering Group, will present a look at emerging axioms of electric aircraft propulsion design and show how advances in battery system level energy density are transforming electrified aircraft propulsion.
  • Jon Fifield, Chief Engineer for Astronics Advanced Electronic Systems and Chair of SAE’s AE-7 Aerospace Electrical Power and Equipment Committee, will discuss electrical power system design and the need for higher voltage components, as well as the role reversal to be seen between an aircraft engine – the traditional primary power system – and new electrical power systems.
  • Dr. Ravi Rajamani, an independent consultant with years of experience in aerospace propulsion and energy, is the author of “Electric Flight Technology: The Unfolding of a New Future.” His presentation will outline the history of electric propulsion as it pertains to aerospace, including battery, solar, and fuel-cell systems, and discuss trends associated with these technologies.
  • Todd Spierling, Chief Engineer of Advanced Technologies at United Technologies Aerospace Systems, will examine “more electric” and “electric propulsion” trends in the aircraft industry. He’ll show how common equipment may be found between these trends and how technology improvements targeted at one can benefit the other. He’ll also explain how both trends can help target future technology research activities.
  • Sven Taubert, HO Foresight and Market Intelligence, Lufthansa Technik, is focused on “all-electric” and “more electric” aircraft and cross-company cabin R&D programs. He will look at current all-electric and hybrid-electric aircraft configurations from an operator’s point of view as well as from the airline’s perspective – mainly driven by the business case – and from the MRO perspective, including advantages such as predictive maintenance.
