Jeff Crystal of Voltaic Systems will explore energy harvesting with solar panel / Li-ion battery hybrids, examining the deployment of hybrid solutions that combine solar PV panels with industrial grade Li-ion batteries to deliver a long-term renewable power supply. This topic is important because the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is being powered by remote wireless networks that monitor external environments along with factory automation and control applications. In instances where daily energy consumption can quickly deplete a primary (non-rechargeable) battery, various forms of energy harvesting should be considered – most commonly combining solar PV panels with rechargeable Li-ion batteries to store the harvested energy, resulting in a renewable and environmentally friendly power supply.
Christian Fell of POSITAL-FRABA will discuss harvesting energy for low-power electronics, focusing on technology for harvesting small amounts of electrical energy (up to 200 nanojoules per cycle) from mechanical motion. Engineers and scientists have been on the lookout for ways to enable stand-alone devices to collect small amounts of energy from the surrounding physical environment to power isolated electronic circuits. Using low-power design to minimize power consumption is beneficial to all remote wireless applications.

Sol Jacobs of Tadiran Batteries will examine the use of batteries for long-life remote devices in harsh environments by explaining the differences between industrial and commercial batteries and their use with energy harvesting.
