The next big thing in composites has been around for more than forty years. Multidirectional carbon/carbon composites have been used in solid fuel rocket motors for decades. The introduction of polymer matrix materials is enabling new growth of this technology. These composites offer significant advantages over metals, such as high specific strength and stiffness, directional tailorability, and high creep and fatigue resistance. Traditional laminated composites share these same properties, but complex molding and layup schedules eliminate all but the largest and simplest parts from being cost effective. The ability to machine these materials without the risk of delamination opens up a new world where complex composite parts can be produced using traditional metal methods and composite materials can spread their benefit even further.
