BEV or ICE: Aluminum Extrusions and Tomorrow’s Vehicles


Regardless of the resolution of the current dispute over light vehicle fuel economy and carbon emission standards, the drive to reduce vehicle mass will continue. Engineers developing the next round of vehicles not only have to strive for vehicle efficiency improvements but also must seek to offset mass increases from additional comfort and ADAS components.

It is estimated that the suite of sensors, processors, cameras, and cabling for full vehicle autonomy will add 300-400 pounds. While full autonomy is still a ways off, much of the capability (and the weight) is being added now. When it comes to battery electric vehicles (BEVs), the challenge is even greater. While the engine and transmission weight is eliminated, the addition of batteries, electric motors, cabling, and control systems can easily add a net 500 pounds to the vehicle.

This 60-minute Webinar provides an overview of some of the growing ways that aluminum extrusions are reducing mass and improving vehicle performance, regardless of powertrain. It also explores how extrusions can create weight and cost-effective battery enclosures, as well as outlining the steps for designing effective extrusion-based solutions.
