Optical Coating Design

SPONSORED BY:

Most precision optics, whether used in scientific, medical, industrial, or military applications, incorporate some type of thin film coating to enhance their capabilities. This Webinar from the editors of Tech Briefs Media delves into some of the more popular types of coatings, what they do, and how they're applied. Here are three topics that will be discussed by the panel of experts during this 60-minute Webinar:

The challenges in multilayer coatings will be examined as well as innovations in improving thin-film coating accuracy, with focus on achieving greater accuracy in matching theoretical thin-film designs.

Hidden effects of coating stress

Many modern-day optical coating technologies, such as magnetron sputtering and ion beam sputtering, involve high-energy material deposition. While these techniques can create coatings with distinct advantages, they can impart a significant amount of stress on the coating and substrate. This stress can lead to issues with surface figure, impacting the transmitted or reflected wavefront error of coated optics. The hidden effects of coating stress will be explained as well as how to choose the proper coating technology for an application.

Process of coating chalcogenides

Typical IR substrates, such as germanium and silicon, are often easy to coat with DLC. However, coating chalcogenides can be a temperamental process. Failure to provide the appropriate base material layers and DLC thickness can result in unmet durability levels, undue stress, and premature rupture. Finding the ideal balance will be examined in this Webinar as well as a new process for producing long-lasting DLC coatings. Benefits include fabrication flexibility, high transmission, stellar spectral performance, and lower production costs.
