2020 Trends in Electronics Sourcing

Trade wars, Covid, and other disruptive forces have created increasing complexity and uncertainty for most manufacturers. Nowhere is this more evident than in the high-tech value chain – which also is a rapidly changing marketplace. Excellence in component sourcing and creating connected processes across the design-to-manufacturing process for New Product Introduction (NPI) processes are more important than ever.

Supplyframe sponsored a research study executed by Dimensional Research that surveyed 217 participants at OEMs of 500 or more employees with decision-making responsibility for electronic components.

One of the primary findings was that volatility and risk have accelerated in recent years in the global electronics value chain: Specifically, of companies researched:

  • 53% had product launches have been delayed or cancelled
  • 37% have been unable to fill customer orders
  • 35% had products reworked to replace components that are no longer available
