Why is this fuel cell producing less power?
One of the factors limiting fuel cell efficiency is its ability to promote the oxygen reduction reaction at the cathode. If the level of carbonate on the cells surface is too high it can create a barrier which hinders fuel cell performance. These carbonates have a detrimental effect on the oxygen reduction reaction at the surface and act as a limit to the oxygen ion transport through the cell. Identifying that this is the reason your fuel cells are not reaching their potential can only be achieved with a surface analysis technique that can analyze the first few nm of the surface.
