Mass Flow Explained: Thermal Versus Differential Pressure

There are several technology options in gas mass flow measurement devices, including variable area, Coriolis, and ultrasonic, but the two that are most frequently compared against each other these days are thermal and differential pressure. These technologies are the most commonly used, due to their-wide ranging capabilities across a variety of applications, and equipment manufacturers often focus on either technology or both.

Thermal-based technology, with its capillary bypass tube and temperature differential detection, is a very reliable method to accurately measure gas mass flow. Differential pressure, one of the more traditional technology options, is great for applications where warm-up time needs to be minimized and accuracy is less critical.
