Eaton’s Vehicle Group was part of a team that authored “Impact of Cylinder Deactivation and Cylinder Cutout via Flexible Valve Actuation on Fuel Efficient Aftertreatment Thermal Management at Curb Idle.” This study compares diesel engine aftertreatment thermal management improvements possible via cylinder deactivation (CDA) versus cylinder cutout. The paper demonstrates that CDA is the most efficient strategy to maintain desirable diesel aftertreatment temperatures for curb idle operation while providing up to 40% fuel savings.
