Distributed Sensing Beyond Rayleigh Scattering Limits in Single and Multicore Fiber Waveguides
Optical fibers with enhanced scattering properties can provide distributed reflection signals beyond the limits set by Rayleigh scattering in traditional fibers. These fibers show attenuation close to the bare optical fiber despite having back scattering more than an order of magnitude larger than the Rayleigh scattering of bare fiber. Enhanced fibers can be used in lengths from one meter in shape sensing applications to more than one kilometer in distributed acoustic sensing.
